New free Ping Pong Parlour in the Belfry!

The new free Ping Pong Parlour in The Belfry is an instant hit!

“We’re absolutely delighted with our new Ping Pong Parlour, the tables have been full ever since we opened it. It’s brilliant seeing so many of our shoppers & visitors having simple fun, young & old alike!”

We were joined today by Colette Gooding of Table Tennis England & Emma Eaton of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, whom are passionate about inspiring people to get active and lead happier, healthier lifestyles by introducing table tennis into their everyday lives.  They were joined by members from local Table Tennis clubs, offering some free coaching & having fun with their rapid firing Ping Pong Robot!

The Parlour, that opened last week on the Upper Mall in The Belfry, came about after an initial conversation between Collette & Andy Nash (Belfry Centre Manager). The Ping Pong Parlour, initiative with Table Tennis England, turns available shop space into a fun, accessible, informal venue for passers-by to simply play Ping Pong for free. Creating a vibrant and exciting leisure activity within the centre, for members of the public to enjoy table tennis with others.

The Ping Pong Parlour project was shortlisted for a prestigious Sports Industry Award 2019.

Collette said “It’s brilliant what the Belfry has created here. I live locally & every time I’ve seen the parlour it’s been really well used, my Dad even queued here on Saturday. There are about thirty Parlours across the Country & I’m so pleased to now have one so locally in The Belfry!”.

Emma Eaton (of RBBC) is looking to work with local Table Tennis clubs to ensure that people who try table tennis and enjoy playing in The Belfry, can progress onto a club if they wish. She is also hoping to get local office workers picking up a bat in their lunch break & maybe even get an office league or competition going.

Andy Nash went onto say “This has made my summer, it feels like my little field of dreams “if you build it they will come!” and so far the Redhill people certainly have come, to enjoy it! In reply to questions over how long it will be in the Belfry, well obviously it is subject to our having suitable space available, but if this fabulous free facility continues to be respected & so well used, then we hope to keep it here for the foreseeable future”.

It's great that the profile of Table Tennis, is about to get a boost with the charismatic Will Bayley, the Paralympic table tennis Gold Medal winning champion, soon strutting his stuff in front of an audience of millions as a contestant on the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing.
