Reigate and Banstead Writes Competition!

Reigate and Banstead Writes is a local short story competition. It is open to all students who go to school in the borough of Reigate and Banstead and who are in school years 5-9. The first round in 2017 attracted 402 entries. The idea is simple, children are asked to write as story set in the area they live.  We are hoping to match or even better this, when the second round opens in JANUARY 2019.

What is the criteria?

  • Stories must be set in places in the Borough of Reigate and Banstead.  Or strongly allude to places within the Borough (e.g journeys beginning and/or ending at Redhill.) Place and landmarks such as local shops, pubs, venues, parks and streets can and should be referenced. The more local the story, the better.
  • Stories must be fictional and not an account of real events.
  • Stories can be any genre, funny, historical, adventurous, fantasy or magical.
  • Should be no more than 1,000 words, (but can be less).
  • Teachers or librarians may use this as a class activity but students must write the story themselves.
  • Stories can be handed into school, if there is a named member of staff within school (usually the school librarian or English department) with an entry form attached.
  • Otherwise, entries can be submitted to R&B writes c/o of the Warwick School. (address and contact details follow)
  • The stories will be collated and distributed between the judging panel for decisions on finalists and winners.
  • 1st prize is a Kindle Paper white, with 4 x runner up prizes as donated by The Belfry Shopping Centre, Redhill.

Some ideas to get started

Have an army of ducks taken over Priory Park? Or has a time portal opened in Reigate Castle Grounds? Have aliens landed on Earlswood Lakes? Is the Landfill site hiding a secret volcano? Have you enjoyed a day out with friends on Redhill Common? Or can you write a humorous diary entry detailing a day out picnicking on  Banstead Common?

Closing date is 28th February 2019.

The judges will make their decision by April 2019.The winners will be notified and prizes handed out at prize giving ceremony. Date tbc.
